Aviation enters ETS in New Zealand

New Zealand has implemented the first major emissions trading scheme to affect aviation. Although fuel suppliers, rather than users, are expected to take responsibility for compliance, but airlines were able to voluntarily opt-in to the scheme. Of the major airlines, only Air New Zealand decided to do so. The scheme only applies to domestic air travel – thus avoiding the legal challenges that the European Union’s scheme has encountered.
