Companies confused by UK emissions scheme, says report

Nearly half of the businesses set to participate in the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme (CRC) are unclear on how to forecast their CO2 emissions and purchase carbon allowances – two of the scheme’s principal actions – potentially exposing themselves to financial penalties.

The same number believe government advice on the new legislation has been inadequate, according to npower’s Business Energy Index (nBEI), an annual survey tracking business opinion on energy use and carbon emissions. The scheme goes live on April 1. Many organisations in the aviation industry will be affected by the scheme, as reported in the August-September 2009 issue (8) of Aviation and the Environment.
