Don’t mess with Mother Nature
Although the Icelandic volcano eruption was not caused by human actions the thought strikes, to those with a “greener” frame of mind, that the event serves as a potent reminder of the power of Mother Nature.
While the effects of climate change in the future cannot necessarily be accurately predicted, it is possible that similar events to the Iceland volcano could be triggered, and on a much wider scale, making the disruption and travel chaos that we are currently seeing in the UK and much of Europe commonplace.
This might sound a bit fantastic, but surely the point is that current events – with all UK flights grounded - have proven that aviation is absolutely and entirely subservient to Mother Nature when she so chooses. That is why the industry, like any other, has a responsibility to restrict its negative impact on the environment. It might be a good joke to ridicule environmentalists – and undoubtedly some of the claims out there are plain crazy – but it is no laughing matter when natural events bring all airlines to a standstill.
So aviation players have the power to act and take environmental issues seriously – or be prepared to be powerless when nature strikes.
