EU and US sign MoU to link air traffic management systems

The European Commission and US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will link their respective air traffic management (ATM) modernisation programmes, SESAR and NextGen. The two parties have signed a MoU and a first technical annex to collaborate on research and development in commercial aviation, such as alternative fuels, aircraft design, unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), sub-orbital aircraft and satellite-based communications. “Interoperability between SESAR and NextGen is in fact essential for airspace users - airlines in particular - as it will enable aircraft to fly in the US and in the EU airspaces with the same equipment to navigate, communicate and report its position, avoiding additional costs and weights,” said the European Commission in a statement.
