Single European Sky more necessary than ever, says Lufthansa

Lufthansa Group chairman and CEO Wolfgang Mayrhuber says the huge disruption caused by the Icelandic volcano shows that the implementation of the Single European Sky is “more necessary than ever”.

“The lockdown of airspace did not only hit the airlines, but the entire economy. Today we know that the danger situation was entirely overrated and the consequences of this were severely underestimated,” he said: “The experience of the past weeks has ruthlessly revealed that we require a pan-European concept to deal with such situations. The Single European Sky is more necessary than ever. However, a swift introduction of something that has now been discussed for decades is still not yet within sight. We must take prompt action here in the interest of Europe.” Mayrhuber was speaking at Lufthansa’s Annual General Meeting in Berlin.
Asiana Airlines has conducted an energy reducing test flight, taking into consideration all areas from maintenance, preparation, take-off, cruising, and landing. The “Eco Flight” was the first ever domestic aircraft to receive the Carbon Labeling official certification for the airline transportation service sector from the South Korean Ministry of Environment. According to the airline, a total of 500kg of carbon was reduced. If the same procedures were always performed on the route flown , a total of 800 tons of carbon would be reduced, it estimated.
